AI-assisted codebase cleanup

Clean Up a Cursor / Claude Code Codebase

Building with Cursor or Claude Code gets you real velocity — you're writing and reviewing actual code, not just prompting a generator. But months of fast AI-assisted sessions without a cleanup pass leave patterns that only get more expensive to unwind the longer they sit.

    Sound familiar?

    What's actually going wrong

The specific symptoms we see most often.

    Inconsistent patterns across the codebase

Three different ways of handling the same kind of API call or form, because each was written in a different session with different context.

Duplicated logic nobody has time to consolidate

The same validation or formatting logic copy-pasted across files instead of extracted, because it was faster to ask for a new version than find the old one.

No one fully understands the auth or data flow anymore

Layers of AI-assisted changes on top of each other until the original mental model of how data moves through the app has eroded.

Growing bug rate as the codebase scales

Each new feature takes longer and breaks more things, because the foundation was never restructured as it grew past its original shape.

    Why this happens

AI coding assistants are excellent at solving the problem directly in front of them, in the context of a single session. They're not naturally incentivized to notice that a similar problem was already solved three files away, or that a pattern that made sense at 5,000 lines is actively hurting you at 25,000. That accumulation is normal — it's not a sign you used the tools wrong.

The fix isn't to distrust AI-assisted development. It's a periodic human pass: read the whole codebase for patterns, consolidate what's duplicated, and document the parts a future session (yours or ours) needs to understand before changing.

    What we do about it

    1

    Full-codebase read, not a file-by-file guess

We read for patterns and duplication across the whole project, not just the file that's currently causing a bug.

    2

    Consolidate duplicated logic

Shared utilities and consistent patterns replace copy-pasted variations of the same logic.

    3

Document the architecture that actually exists

Not the architecture you intended — the one the code actually implements today, so the next session (human or AI) starts from truth.

    4

Add tests around the riskiest flows

Auth, payments, and data writes get coverage first, since those are the flows a bad AI-assisted edit is most expensive to get wrong.

Code Audit from $199, Fix Sprint from $600

The audit alone is often the most useful deliverable here — a clear map of what's duplicated and risky, whether or not you have us do the cleanup.
